Academic researchers are increasingly being asked to demonstrate the benefit of their research to wider communities, or in other words ‘research impact.’ Public engagement, centred on collaboration and communication, can be a rewarding and useful way of generating impact. Engaging with the public can improve our research, raise our profile and empower our wider audiences.
In this talk, Australian historian Kate Bagnall, explains how working with the public has shaped her practice as an academic historian working in the field of Chinese Australian history. Kate will discuss a range of public-facing activities and methodologies she uses in her work – including blogging and social media, community talks and workshops, and open access publishing – and contemplate the benefits and challenges that engaging with the public brings to an academic researcher today.
 
About the Speaker: 
 Dr. Kate Bagnall is a historian at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She specialises in Australian engagements with China in the 19th-20th centuries.
