Forgiving the Dead, Forgiving Oneself

Luke Russell
Sydney University

Abstract:
Philosophical accounts of forgiveness typically focus on cases in which victims forgive the perpetrators who wronged them. In this paper I will consider what we ought to say about two non-standard cases: those in which you might forgive a person who is already dead, and those in which you might forgive yourself. Is forgiveness even possible in these cases? If it is possible, which moral reasons bear on these kinds of forgiveness, and how do they differ from those that are present in standard cases?
