Gender/Diversity/Democracy: Wait Till After the Revolution

Date: Thursday, 13 February 2020
Time: 5-6:30 PM
Venue: 4.36, 4/F, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU

Speaker: Petula Ho, Department of Social Work and Social Administration, HKU
Moderator: Peter Cunich, Associate Professor, Department of History, HKU

The idea of “Wait till after the revolution” came from second wave feminists’ experiences with the Left, who kept telling them that their concerns as women were secondary and should wait until after the revolution. In a similar vein, feminist issues are often seen as secondary and inconsequential in the context of fighting for the future of Hong Kong. We argue that any struggle for democracy and freedom should be concerned with wider issues of social justice and equality for all, where a feminist perspective is essential.
