Navigating the Transnational Academic Job Market

5 December 2019, 3-5 p.m.
Room 7.45, Run Run Shaw Tower
Centennial Campus, HKU

Candidates are increasingly applying for jobs across the world, from the United States, to China, to Europe. And yet each region has its own unique expectations and unspoken rules, making it difficult to navigate an interconnected but fragmented global job market.

This session for masters, PhD students, and early career scholars looking for permanent employment will discuss strategies for approaching various regional job markets. Seminar presenters will offer advice and will field questions on how to tailor job materials for different contexts. We will also discuss the implications of what has become a global academic job market, including the relative merits of pursuing PhDs in different regions.

Each seminar presenter will give a 5-7 minute reflection, followed by a seminar-style discussion and Q&A, when participants will be invited to share their own experiences. Seminar presenters include Vanessa Smith, Professor of English, University of Sydney (via FaceTime); Alastair McClure, Assistant Professor of History, University of Hong Kong; and Nan Zhang, Associate Professor of English, Fudan University.

This event is open to anyone who would like to attend, and refreshments will be provided. Registration is not required but appreciated; please contact jvaldez@hku.hk or jbowes@hku.hk to register by November 21.
