Homonormative economic familialism (HEC) in cinema, as I will define it, is a mode of sexual citizenship that utilizes an ethics of sonhood as a means to neutralize the radicalizing potential of queer politics. I then apply this concept in my analysis of Enter the Phoenix. Using the stardom of Daniel Wu as a starting point, I demonstrate how HEC constructs and mobilizes a form of gay subjectivity capable of engaging both the politics that define post-1997 Hong Kong cinema and the larger social implications of such entanglements.
