There is no Black (woman) in the Tricolor Flag: Intersections of Race and Gender in Contemporary Italian Society and Culture

Speaker: Caterina Romeo, Associate Professor, Sapienza Università di Roma

Moderator: Otto Heim, Associate Professor, School of English, The University of Hong Kong

In this lecture, Caterina Romeo will expose the systematic attempt to marginalize or utterly erase black subjects, and specifically black women, from the Italian national body, showing the continuity existing between past (colonial) and present (postcolonial) strategies of oppression. She will advocate the necessity to develop an intersectional methodology in order to contrast such systematic attempt and show how an intersectional perspective is brought into the Italian cultural context by African-Italian and Italian of African descent women writers, artists, and intellectuals, who problematize monolithic identities and disturb traditional narratives of national homogeneity and female solidarity.

Date: 22 November 2019 (Friday)
Time: 4:30-6 PM
Venue: 4.36, 4/F, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU
